The Last of the Flyer Competition Entries

The Exhibition may be behind us but there's still more flyer photos to share.

These photos come from Di Ballantyne.  Di took our little flyer on a big adventure on board the Trans Siberian Train Trip. The flyer went to Sydney, Singapore, Beijing, Ulan Bataar, Irkutsk (Russia), Moscow and St Petersburg and back via Singapore and Sydney.

"The most isolated was the steppes on Mongolia, the most remote was the ger camp in northern Mongolia, the closest connection (to patchwork and quilting) was the Mongolian Quilt shop I found in Ulan Bataar, and the most distant from Canberra was the Field of Mars Park shot taken in St Petersburg."

tACTile exhibition is open at Belconnen Arts Centre, 9-25 August

the tACTile group is holding an exhibition at the Belconnen Arts Centre. If you are interested in quilts, particularly art quilts, this is the exhibition to see. There are 100 pieces in the exhibition. Members of tACTile are also members of Canberra Quilters.

Quilt Show in Young, NSW - 25 & 26 May

This weekend there is a quilt show in Young, NSW (it is only a couple of hours from Canberra). 
It is open from 10 am to 4 pm in the Young Town Hall in Boorowa Street. 
CQ member and Young resident, Carmel Price also helps to organise this event. They use our quilt frames to help with the hanging.
As well as the quilts on display, these traders are attending with items for sale:

• Westalee Rulers, Leonie will also show how to use her rulers - the new ones and older ones
• Robynettes, Joy will demonstrate some work with hexagons
• The Quilters Stash (from Murrumburrah)
• Patches of Heaven (from Temora)
• Country Matters (from Cootamundra), Janelle will also demonstrate hand piecing
• Caragabal's Off road Country Quilting
• Chiatanya Designs (from Lake Bathurst, this is member Fiona Hammond) and she will be demonstrating several things - kumihimo braiding, stick weaving, and perhaps some beading techniques.

Beneath the Southern Sky @ Queanbeyan: 4-18 December

Textile works by CQ members Jenny Bowker, Dianne Firth and Helen Godden feature in the travelling exhibition Beneath the Southern Sky curated by Brenda Gael Smith.   The exhibition continues on tour in 2012 to the The Q Exhibition Space, Queanbeyan, 4-18 December 2012.  Come along to the opening night function at the Q from 5.30-7.30pm, Tuesday 4 December. Please RSVP to Brenda.

Quilt Show in Goulburn 10 & 11 March

Here is a message from one of our members/ sponsors about a quilt show in Goulburn next weekend:

Quilts at Mandelson’s of Goulburn

Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March; 10am-4pm

Entry by gold coin; all proceeds go to local Anglicare Emergency Accommodation.

This is a quilt show with a difference! There will be a huge array of superb quilts from well known quilters from this area and beyond. Our guest quilters are Beth Miller and Wendy Keegan (from QuiltsbyPattern), and we will also be showing prizewinning quilts from this year’s Canberra Show.

The ‘difference’ is that the quilts will be shown around the magnificence of Mandelson’s, using the building and antique furniture to display them to their best advantage. The quilts vary from traditionally pieced designs to contemporary appliqué patterns, and will be sure to inspire. 

There will be items for sale from Claire Ayling Bali Batiks (contemporary cotton batik fabric), Julie Woods Superior Threads (top quality threads in stunning colours for every occasion), Beth Miller and Wendy Keegan from QuiltsbyPattern (the designs can be seen in the quilts on display), and also Bungendore Country Patchwork will be with us with an array of needs for quilters. Please note that purchases can be made with cash or cheque.

As the quilt show is taking place there will be no High Tea this month, but Claire and Steve will be serving tea, coffee and  wonderful slices and cakes in Mandelson’s dining room.

The Quilt Show is to coincide with Goulburn’s Heritage and Roses Festival.

Mandelson’s is on the corner of Sloane and Clinton Streets in central Goulburn. Entry from the front door in Sloane Street.

The Q Exhibition space in Queanbeyan has the Australia Wide 2 exhibition. See 31 January post below for details. Closes on Saturday, February 25.

Braidwood Quilt Event - Deadline approaches for entries

This year, a local Braidwood business, Cortona Resources, is offering an acquisitive award of $1,000 for an art quilt at the Braidwood Quilt Event with the theme

"We are Australian".

As well as this acquisitive award, there is the usual $200 prize for viewers' choice at the indoor exhibition (the main competition, which is open from the official opening on the Friday night, to the end of the day on the Sunday), plus an additional $200 prize for the viewers' choice winner of the outdoor exhibition (the Airing of the Quilts which is held on the Saturday only). There are some other cash prizes on offer as well, plus the usual other kinds of prizes for various categories.

The deadline for receipt of entry forms is Monday October 24, 2011, and the quilts must be received by Monday November 14, 2011.

The actual Braidwood Quilt Event runs from the evening of Friday November 25 (6 pm for the official opening, till about 7:30 pm), to Sunday November 27. Batemans Bay Exhibition 19-21 September

The South Coast and Country Quilters Guild will be holding their ninth Biennial Quilt Exhibition this weekend at Batemans Bay Soldiers Club. The Exhibition is open on Friday 19 September from 10 am - 5 pm, the same period on Saturday 20th, and from 10 am - 4 pm Sunday 21st. Members who head for the coast this weekend will be very welcome.

MY PLACE is a travelling exhibition of 90 contemporary art quilts from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa curated by Jeanette Botha, Dijanne Cevaal and Anne Scott.

Congratulations to CQ members (including Helen Gray, Beth Miller, Beth & Trevor Reid and Brenda Smith) whose quilts have been selected to be part of the MY PLACE quilts. You can now view their quilts, along with the other Australian quilts on the MY PLACE quilt gallery.

Visitors to the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne in late February 2009 will be able to view all of the MY PLACE quilts in person.

"The New Quilt", Manly, 27 January - 26 February 2006

Manly Art Gallery & Museum is presenting an exhibition, in conjunction with the NSW Quilters' Guild Inc, of Australian contemporary quilt textiles from 27 January to 26 February 2006. The exhibition comprises 27 works which represent the innovation and diversity of quilt textile making today.

Three works by members of Canberra Quilters Inc are represented in the exhibition.

Bong Bong Quilters exhibition 20-21 October

Canberra Quilters mailbox has just received an invitation for members to attend the Bong Bong Quilters and Friends 2007 exhibition.

Admission is $5, which goes to CanAssist Cancer Assistance Network.

Bong Bong is at the northern edge of Moss Vale, Burradoo at the southern edge of Bowral, and in Bowral is the Bradman Museum, so drop the boys off there and enjoy!
