ROWmakers sets interesting challenge for next block

Joanne West, the co-convenor of the ROWmakers meeting on the second Wednesday, has sent a message about the latest meeting. The three ingredients selected for the next block sets an interesting combination for some.

Hi Ladies,

We were a slightly smaller group than normal, but still very enjoyable. I guess quite a few ladies had better offers -half their luck!!!!

Just when we thought we had everything under control, we got this month's INGREDIENTS:

 .HOUSES - Mary Thompson

Anyone doing a Christmas quilt is laughing - as for the rest of us, some serious thinking is required.

I looked up some quilt names in my 5,500 blocks book. As well as the obvious (log cabin, courthouse steps etc), there were blocks with 'housewife' in the title and even ones with 'white house' in the name (white house, lady in the white house, white house rose, white house steps) - a chance to kill two birds with one stone!

Weekend get together

We thought we'd organise something between the July and September meetings.

The possible dates are Sunday 22 July, Sunday 19 August or Saturday 1 September, for afternoon tea.

I would appreciate feedback on which dates are suitable so that we can confirm a date at the July meeting. (Wednesday 11 July)

Modern Quilting - 14 June

A reminder that the Modern Quilting interest group is meeting on Thursday 14 June at 7.30pm. Come along and find out what it is about - perhaps try some new directions in your work?

Quilts for Others (QFO) working bee - 12 June

The next QFO working bee is on Tuesday 12 June from 10.00am until 2.30pm. Come along and help by cutting, sewing, pinning... BYO lunch, morning tea provided.
This is the second last working bee before the exhibition so lots of activity to prepare kits etc for display and demonstration at the exhibition.

At the May evening meeting 124 were on display, ready for distribution to various organisations throughout Canberra.
Here is an example of a quilt made for QFO. It has been on display in the corridor outside our room.

Evening Drop-in - Queen's Birthday Holiday

The normal drop-in on the 2nd Monday falls this month on the Queen's Birthday Public Holiday. Room is open from 7.00pm until 9.30pm.

ROWmakers meets next Wednesday

The ROWmakers group meets next Wednesday (13th) for the next big reveal. The elements chosen for this month are: purple, crazy piecing, words.

The elements for the first three rounds were:
1- black, curves/circles, stars
2- orange, diamonds/hexagons, people
3- blue, piecing, plants

Art Quilters meet on Saturday 9th June

The Art Quilters group meets this Saturday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Here is a message from the convenor, Buffy :

Activity:  playing with Sharpie permanent markers and Isocol

          Please bring any Sharpie pens you might have and different backgrounds (paper, silk, cotton, lace, etc) for us to mark.  The Isocol will dilute and spread the paint on silk, but we’ll have to experiment and see if they are any good with other materials.  We’ll work on top of freezer paper which I will bring.  I already have bought a bottle of Isocol and have a spray bottle, so you don’t have to bring those either.  See short video:

Evening Meeting tonight

Tonight is the regular monthly evening meeting. Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. Come along and enjoy the company of quilters. Members can borrow from the library.
This month you can hand in your exhibition entries to the Exhibition Secretary.

Art Quilters Meeting on Saturday 12 May

The Art Quilters meeting this Saturday starts at 1pm. Buffy has sent the following message about the activity and requirements for the day:

It would be fun to play with paper table napkins … so if you are interested, please bring napkins, fusible webbing, background fabric, and felt.

Also bring please new books, Show&Tell, etc

Tonight's the night for Modern Quilting at Canberra Quilters

Tonight is the first meeting of the Modern Quilting group that is being formed within Canberra Quilters.
Come along and see what it is all about. Jenny Bowker is the leader of this new group.
Meeting starts at 7.30pm in the Canberra Quilters' room at Cook.

Evening Meeting - 3 May: Wendy Saclier guest speaker

At the evening meeting this Thursday (7.30pm start) Wendy Saclier will be speaking about her journey with quilting.
As it is close to Mothers' Day there is a special "Show and Tell" for quilts made for mothers, with mothers or any connection to "Mum".

The adjourned AGM will also be taking place - please along to make sure we get a quorum.

Quilts and textiles in Queanbeyan this weekend

Don't forget that the Queanbeyan Quilters are holding their exhibition this weekend - 28 & 29 April. It is held in the Bicentennial Conference Centre. Entrance is off Crawford Street, but you can park in the car park at the rear (enter from Rutledge Street).

It is open 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. Lots of quilts, a sales table of hand made goods, local traders selling their wares. Check out the "On This Day" challenge quilts.

ANZAC Day - No drop-in

The drop-in scheduled for 25 April will not take place.
The next scheduled meeting and drop-in will be on Friday 27 April, 10am until 4pm.

AGM ajourned until 3 May

As those in attendance know the AGM had to be adjourned on 5 May. We didn't get the required quorum. It will now be held on 3 May - so please come along. There is very little business to be conducted and it is usually over in 10-15 minutes.  We still have a vacancy for the Treasurer position, all the other positions have nominations.

As an added incentive on 3 may our guest speaker will be Wendy Saclier, life member and one of the founders of Canberra Quilters. Come along and here about Wendy's quilting journey - including the joint quilts she made with her mother Vivienne.

Kay Haerland workshop - June1-3, 2012

There are still some places available in the 3-day Kay Haerland Realistic Landscape workshop. Kay is retiring from teaching next year so this is one of the last opportunities to do this workshop (locally at least). Here is a  link to Kay's website for more details about te workshop.

Canberra Quilters Inc Raffle 2012 - tickets available soon

This is the raffle quilt for 2012, "Batik Rhapsody". The quilt is a log cabin design in batik fabrics in shades of blue, with hints of purple and some black. It was designed by member Elizabeth Rose and made by Elizabeth and Janet Cruise. The exquisite free-motion quilting was done by member Jenny Bowker. The quilting incorporates individual motifs, interspersed with sweeping feathers. All sewing was done on domestic sewing machines. The quilt is 236cm square and will fit a queen-size bed.

The winner of the Canberra Quilters Inc Members Exhibition raffle gets to choose from three prizes:
The quilt "Batik Rhapsody", valued at $2750, or
a Bernina 700D overlocker, valued at $799, kindly donated by Bernina Australia, or
a Kingfisher 65"x 65" Design Wall valued at $240, kindly donated by Jackie McNab of Brindabella Quilting.
The remaining prizes will go to the second and third drawn tickets.
The raffle will be drawn Sunday 12 August at the close of the Canberra Quilters Inc Members’ Exhibition.

The evening drop-in this Monday (9 April) is on as normal, despite it being a Public Holiday. Starts at 7.00pm, until 9.30pm. Come along and see what is available - sew with other members, use the pinning table or the library.

AGM on Thursday 5 April

Don't forget the AGM is on this Thursday at the evening meeting- we need members to attend to achieve a quorum. No nominations have been received for Treasurer, Secretary and Committee Member. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions - we can't function without a committee!
 PLUS there is an interesting guest speaker, the reveal of the dragon mini-quilt challenge, presentation of QFO quilts to Canteen and all the usual show & tell, raffles and good conversation.

Three day landscape workshop with Kay Haerland

Canberra Quilters Inc is thrilled to be hosting award-winning quilter Kay Haerland on June 1-3 for a three day landscape design and embellishment class.
